Wood Chipping Tips

Here’s a few important Tips for successful wood chipping.

  • Use the right sized machine for the job.  Wood chipper specs include branch diameter, so if your yard has trees that shed large brances with a diameter greater than 2 or 3 inches, then you will want to carefully review the specs to be sure your wood chipper can handle that large of a branch.
  • If you wish to mulch leaves, be sure to get a wood chipper shredder that has a hopper for placing leaves, twigs and small branches through the shredder intake.  Do not place larger branches through the shredder hopper.
  • Get the right type of wood chipping machine for your yard.  If your yard is small and you can do all your chipping within 100 feed of an electrical outlet, then perhaps a good quality electric wood chipper with a heavy duty electric cord is the ideal solution for yo.  But if you want to bring your machine to remote locations of a large property then you’ll want a gas wood chipper with a good set of wheels.  There’s lots of great machines to choose from, and our favorite for most large yards is the Patriot Wood Chipper series, and you can get free shipping on a patriot wood chipper through MyGreatHomeAndYard.com (please let them know we sent you!).
  • Plan what you are going to do with your chips or shredding.  Many machines include a leaf collection bag for your shredding which you can use for mulch in your garden.  You can order a jumbo leaf collection bag with added capacity – MyGreatHomeAndYard sells one that fits nearly all makes and models.  The added capacity is a welcome improvement for your fall cleanup activity.
